A New Chapter for Colorectal Cancer Care in Pudong

Recently, Professor Li Xinxiang, a nationally recognized authority in colorectal tumor surgery and Director of Department II of Colorectal Surgery at Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Hospital, officially brought his team to China Pharmaceutical University Affiliated Shanghai GOBROAD Cancer Hospital, located in Pudong Waigaoqiao. The two hospitals have designated the colorectal tumor subspecialty as their pilot collaboration area, working together through on-site technical guidance, internet-based remote consultations, and multidisciplinary academic exchanges to jointly build a high-level, standardized colorectal tumor diagnosis and treatment system in Pudong.

The Department of Colorectal Surgery at Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Hospital has cultivated its discipline for over three decades, with comprehensive diagnosis and treatment capabilities consistently ranked at the national forefront. Professor Li Xinxiang, who has dedicated many years to clinical practice in colorectal tumors, leads the field in both technical and research achievements. He has performed the world’s first laparoscopic transanal pull-through double-stapled anastomosis without angulation and pioneered the “vascular-centered approach” for laparoscopic radical rectal cancer resection — innovative concepts and techniques in minimally invasive oncologic surgery that have driven industry-wide upgrades in surgical approaches.

Regarding his team’s entry into Shanghai GOBROAD Cancer Hospital and the joint development of the colorectal surgery specialty, Professor Li Xinxiang stated that through departmental contracting and management transfer models, Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Hospital and Shanghai GOBROAD Cancer Hospital have achieved homogenization of medical services between the two institutions. This effectively alleviates pain points such as the shortage of specialized beds in top-tier public tertiary hospitals and long patient waiting times, reducing patient anxiety about accessing care.

The official inauguration of the Colorectal Surgery Department at Shanghai GOBROAD Cancer Hospital marks the full implementation and effectiveness of the specialized medical alliance for cancer prevention and treatment between the hospital and Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Hospital.

As the “dual-track” model for specialized cancer diagnosis and treatment takes root, the scope of collaboration between the two sides will expand from clinical diagnosis and treatment into frontier clinical research, connecting the entire chain of diagnosis, treatment, research, and translation.

“Our hospital leads an average of nearly 50 Phase II–III anti-cancer clinical trials annually. In the future, relying on this new clinical translation platform, we will incubate and produce multiple homegrown innovative drugs,” said Professor Li Jin. The hospital will collaborate with Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Hospital and other top-tier domestic oncology institutions to integrate high-quality research resources, tackle early-phase clinical studies, and benefit a broad population of cancer patients.

“We welcome Professor Li Xinxiang’s team to bring more early-stage clinical research projects to our hospital. We will comprehensively provide facilities, supporting infrastructure, and resource guarantees,” Professor Li Jin added.

“A mature ecosystem for new drug R&D and incubation is also a key driver of this collaboration. Going forward, we will deepen coordination in new drug development, join forces to tackle cutting-edge therapies, and help Pudong produce more high-quality anti-cancer innovative drugs,” Professor Li Xinxiang remarked.
